Why our School community matters

Dr Seuss

Schools are much more than places of learning. At their very best, they are communities in which every individual feels known, valued and cared for. We are mindful of this every time a child joins us and we recognise how important it is for children to attain a sense of belonging as soon as they possibly can.

Educational researcher Professor John Hattie has shown that one of the strongest influences on children's success is their sense of belonging at school. Likewise, recent research from the University of Sussex has highlighted the importance of "mattering" - the feeling that one is noticed, appreciated and significant to others. Children who feel that they matter demonstrate higher wellbeing, greater motivation and stronger engagement with learning.

Our aim is that every child at Lichfield Cathedral School feels seen. Whether through the smile of a teacher, encouragement from a classmate, participation in a club or performing in an assembly, each child should know that they have an important place within our school family.

Parents are integral members of this community too. Education works best when home and school work in partnership, united by shared values and common aspirations for every child.

When children know they matter, they begin to believe that they can make a difference. They become more willing to contribute, more compassionate towards others and more confident in their own abilities. So I encourage you heartily to get in touch with us and let us know of your child’s achievements outside school. We love to celebrate the wide array of skills, talents and hobbies that our pupils pursue. You’ll often see them here in the weekly update and it’s fascinating to see some of the more diverse activities that take place and be amazed at the level of achievement.

Ultimately, schools do not simply educate individuals - they nurture communities in which everyone belongs and everyone has something valuable to offer. We certainly are blessed with an amazing community of glorious individuals here at LCS, for which we are enormously grateful.
