Why Reception is the most important year of your child's life

Reception is far more than the first formal step into education - it’s the year that lays the foundation for your child’s future learning, confidence, and curiosity. While every stage of school matters, research consistently shows that the quality of teaching and environment in the very first year has an unusually powerful, long‑lasting impact.

Why the Right Reception Teacher Really Matters

A great Reception teacher doesn’t just introduce phonics and number work; they help shape how your child feels about learning. Are they excited to discover something new? Do they feel safe making mistakes? Do they persevere when something is tricky? These are habits and mindsets formed astonishingly early.

Children thrive when they are surrounded by adults who are motivated, patient, and genuinely passionate about sparking curiosity. Teachers who love what they do inspire children to love learning right back. That enthusiasm becomes a driving force, helping young learners develop creativity, independence, and the confidence to explore the world around them.

Studies have shown just how lasting this influence can be. Research from Durham University* found that the effectiveness of teaching in Reception can still be seen in higher grades all the way up to and including GCSE level, and even in higher levels of earning as adults. In other words, the learning environment your child experiences at four and five years old continues to echo throughout their school life.

What to Look for When Choosing a Reception Setting

When you’re selecting a school, it’s tempting to focus on facilities or league tables, but for Reception, the most meaningful factors are often more personal and child‑centred. Here are some things worth paying close attention to:

A nurturing teacher who sparks joy in learning

Look for teachers who talk about children with warmth, enthusiasm, and genuine understanding. You want someone who can capture attention, spark imagination, and nurture curiosity day after day - not simply deliver individual “wow” lessons.

Children benefit enormously from teachers who help them sustain interest over time, develop positive attitudes toward school, and understand that learning is a journey rather than a race.

An environment that builds independence

Reception is a time when children learn how to be learners. You should look for a school that supports children to:

  • Try new things with confidence
  • Bounce back after challenges
  • Persist when tasks feel difficult
  • Explore their own ideas
  • Recognise more than one approach to a problem
  • Celebrate the process of learning—not just the outcome
  • Make connections between different experiences and topics

These early habits become the building blocks for resilience, creativity, and problem‑solving later on.

A curriculum that is appropriately challenging

Young children are naturally curious. A well‑designed Reception curriculum doesn’t overwhelm them, but it also doesn’t talk down to them. Instead, it offers:

  • Rich opportunities for exploration
  • A balance of play-based learning and structured activities
  • Plenty of chances to ask questions, investigate, and make discoveries

The goal is to keep children motivated and eager to stretch their thinking.

A warm, supportive atmosphere

Ultimately, your child’s first year at school should feel joyful. A welcoming, inclusive environment helps children feel secure enough to take risks, make friends, and develop a healthy relationship with learning.

Reception Sets the Tone for a Lifetime of Learning

Choosing the right Reception is about choosing the right beginning. You’re not just picking a classroom - you’re choosing the environment in which your child will discover who they are as a learner. With the right teacher, the right level of challenge, and the right nurturing atmosphere, children develop confidence, independence, and an enduring love of learning that carries them through their entire education.

What if my child is already in Reception?

If your child is already in Reception, but you’re not sure it’s the right fit for your child, moving to another school is not as difficult as you might think.  Reception marks the end of the Early Years curriculum, so switching schools before the start of Key Stage 1 is sensible, rather than waiting a few more years. The right school will have a warm, nurturing environment, so the teachers, staff and pupils will be welcoming. Independent schools are used to children joining throughout the academic year.

See for yourself

Visit the Reception class at Lichfield Cathedral School to see the tremendous impact outstanding teaching, small class sizes, and a nurturing environment have on the development of our young pupils.  Bear in mind that you can use your early years funding in Reception for as long as your child is eligible – this can save you more than £1,000 per term.

* One study by Durham University’s Curriculum, Evaluation and Management (CEM) Centre followed 70,000 children over 11 years and revealed that children who are taught well in their first year of school go on to achieve better GCSE results.  Another Durham study showed that four-year-olds with the most effective teachers can expect to earn between £2,000 and £7,500 per annum more on average than their peers.
