Remembering with Gratitude

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.” – Laurence Binyon

Remembrance is one of the most solemn and significant moments in our school year. As we gather to honour those who served - and continue to serve - in the armed forces, we are reminded of the courage, sacrifice, and sense of duty that underpin the freedoms we enjoy today.

Our school community includes a number of military families and pupils who are part of the local Army and Cadet units. Their experiences bring the meaning of service vividly to life, reminding us that commitment to others often requires courage, resilience, and selflessness. These are values at the very heart of our school’s ethos - particularly our belief in service to others.

Research from the Royal British Legion highlights that involving young people in acts of remembrance helps them develop empathy and civic awareness. When pupils take part in ceremonies, lay wreaths, or observe a minute’s silence, they are not only remembering history - they are learning what it means to live responsibly in the present.

This year, our assemblies at Longdon and Lichfield focused on stories of service and sacrifice, reminding children that remembrance is not about glorifying war, but honouring peace. It is a chance to reflect on what it means to live with integrity, compassion, and purpose.

Let us continue to support our military families and to teach our children that remembrance is not a single day in November, but a lifelong attitude of gratitude.
