Learning from the Lunar Society

Education should ignite curiosity. It should help children ask not only “What is the answer?” but also “What if?” and “Why not?” This spirit of inquiry lies at the heart of invention - and it is one of the greatest gifts we can offer young people.
Here in Lichfield, we are fortunate to walk among the echoes of extraordinary thinkers. The Cathedral Close and the wider Midlands are closely connected to the story of the Lunar Society, that remarkable group of inventors, scientists, industrialists, and thinkers who helped shape the modern world.
Figures such as Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Erasmus Darwin, Joseph Priestley, and Josiah Wedgwood met to discuss ideas that transformed industry, science, medicine, and society itself. They gathered under the light of the full moon - hence their name - because it made travel easier after dark. Yet symbolically, they were also bringing light into the world through innovation.
Their example matters for our children today.
Research into creativity and problem-solving in education shows that curiosity-driven learning improves motivation, engagement, and long-term achievement. When children are encouraged to ask questions, test ideas, and take intellectual risks, they become more confident learners and better problem-solvers. In a world where AI developments are racing ahead, the human contribution in the process is essential and requires agile thinking.
Innovation does not belong only in science laboratories. It appears in music, writing, engineering, design, sport, and social leadership. Every child has the capacity to think creatively when given encouragement and opportunity. Parents often see this first: the endless questions at bedtime, the dismantled toys, the improvised inventions made from cardboard and tape. These moments are not distractions from learning - they are learning itself and are often the early embers of later super powers.
At school, we must protect curiosity, not rush to silence it. Practical experiments, debate, independent projects, creative arts, and open-ended thinking all help children see that education is not merely about receiving knowledge, but contributing to it. The Lunar Society also teaches another important lesson: great ideas rarely happen alone. Collaboration matters and progress grows through conversation, challenge, and shared purpose.
We want our pupils to know that they can be creators, not just consumers; contributors, not just observers. The world still needs inventors - not only of machines, but of solutions, kindness, and better ways to live together.
Walking in the footsteps of innovators who once passed through our own Cathedral Close should remind us that extraordinary things often begin with ordinary curiosity.
