Global Essay Competition achievementGrosvenor Hotel London setting for John Locke Global Essay Competition gala dinner for winners

Congratulations to Jess (Year 13) for her achievement in the John Locke Global Essay Competition. The John Locke Institute encourages young people to cultivate the characteristics that turn good students into great writers: independent thought, depth of knowledge, clear reasoning, critical analysis and persuasive style. The Global Essay Competition is open to anyone under 19 years of age and invites students to explore a wide range of challenging and interesting questions beyond the confines of the school curriculum.
Entering an essay in the competition builds knowledge and refines skills of argumentation, and offers the chance to have students' work assessed by experts. The essay prizes are judged by a panel of senior academics drawn from leading universities including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford, under the leadership of the Chairman of Examiners, Professor Terence Kealey D. Phil (Oxon).
Jess  had to submit an essay no longer than 2,000 words in response to one of several questions and, out of 100,277 submissions from 183 countries, Jess was one of the very few shortlisted. She was invited to London recently for an invitation-only academic conference and awards gala dinner at the Grosvenor Hotel. Jess was delighted to be awarded a Commendation for her politics essay "Is democracy in crisis?"
Jess said: "There was an incredible academic programme from a series of keynote speakers all from prestigious universities such as Cambridge, Oxford, Princeton and Brown along with panel discussions on the use of AI and the value of university. There was also a 'village' which was a collection of exhibitors and discussion tables encouraging finalists to discuss key topics with one another. I got to talk to other finalists from various countries such as USA, China, Italy, etc."
To be recognised at a global level for the quality of your research, reasoning, critical analysis and writing style is a massive achievement - many congratulations to Jess!
