Fantastic conducting experience for Laurie

Skilled musician and chorister Laurie  (Year 8), recently had the opportunity to have a lesson with world-renowned conductor John Lubbock OBE in Oxford.  During his career John has conducted six Proms concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, between 1976 and 2006.

The session involved Laurie conducting the Orchestra of St John's Smith Square (seen above), which John founded in 1967 and is now more commonly known as the Orchestra of St John's (OSJ).  In addition, Laurie and John had a long, in-depth conversation about composers and the role of a conductor for an orchestra.

Following the tuition session, Laurie conducted the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra playing the minuet from Haydn's Simfonia 49 during a concert held in the Sheldonian Theatre.  Laurie had a brilliant time and was delighted to be able to conduct two exceptional orchestras in one day.  Well done, Laurie!
