Broadening horizons: the value of co-curricular life

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
W. B. Yeats

While academic subjects form the backbone of school life, we firmly believe that education must extend far beyond the classroom. A truly broad education enables children to discover new talents, nurture hidden passions, and develop skills that will carry them into adulthood.
Indeed, our independence provides opportunities for diversification and enrichment that goes beyond the boundaries of the school timetable.

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation highlights the positive impact of extra-curricular participation on both academic outcomes and wellbeing. Pupils who engage in activities outside the standard curriculum consistently demonstrate higher motivation, confidence, and problem-solving ability. It’s also often the case that pupils make friendships across year groups and engage with teachers who they wouldn’t otherwise know.

At our school, we are delighted to offer a wide range of clubs, from chess and debating to cyber security, entrepreneurship, laser-cut jewellery design, and even share trading and many more besides. I particularly like the fact that LCS pupils can be bell ringers in the Cathedral! Now not many schools can offer that. Each of these opportunities allow children to explore fields they may not otherwise encounter and learn incredibly valuable things about themselves, their strengths and likes. Dr Howard Gardner, known for his theory of multiple intelligences, reminds us that “education is not merely about rote learning, but about discovering the varied ways in which people are smart.”

Whether a child thrives in logic, creativity, communication, or leadership, extracurricular activities provide the fertile ground for that growth. I encourage all parents to support their children in trying something new this year. Often, the smallest step into a club or society can open doors that shape a young person’s future.

Education is not about narrowing choices, but about expanding horizons. Our commitment to a broad curriculum is central to ensuring every child flourishes, discerns their vocation and chooses the right pathways beyond the school gates.
