5 Factors to Look For in an Excellent Children's Choir

Choosing the right choir for your child can be a transformative decision - one that nurtures not only musical talent but also confidence, teamwork, and emotional wellbeing.
As the leader of Lichfield Young Voices Choir, I often speak with parents who are unsure what makes a children’s choir truly great. While every choir has its own personality and strengths, there are several key qualities to look for when deciding where your child will thrive.
1. A Welcoming and Supportive Environment
The best children’s choirs create a space where every child feels valued and safe. Look for a choir that prioritises inclusivity and kindness, where children are encouraged to be themselves and grow at their own pace. A positive atmosphere helps children build confidence and enjoy the process of learning music, even if they’re shy or new to singing.
Ask whether the choir has a “no audition” policy or offers beginner groups. These can be great entry points for children who are just starting out or need time to develop their voice. For example, Young Voices is non-audition and offers your first session free, as a taster, to see if your child would like to join the choir.
2. Skilled and Passionate Leadership
A great choir is led by someone who not only understands music but also understands children. The director should be experienced in working with younger voices, patient in their teaching style, and enthusiastic about helping each child reach their potential. Watch a rehearsal if possible - does the director engage with the children? Are they encouraging and clear in their instruction?
Strong leadership also means good organisation. Rehearsals should be structured, purposeful, and fun, with clear goals and regular feedback.

3. Age-Appropriate Repertoire and Vocal Technique
Children’s choirs should use music that suits the age and vocal development of their singers. Singing should never strain or damage children’s voices. A great choir will teach healthy vocal technique, including posture, breathing, and tone production, in a way that’s accessible and enjoyable.
The repertoire should be varied and engaging - songs that challenge children musically while also sparking joy and creativity. A mix of classical, contemporary, folk, and world music can broaden their musical horizons. Young Voices offers all this, plus the opportunity to learn sacred music and sing in Lichfield Cathedral.
4. Opportunities for Performance and Growth
Performance is a vital part of choir life. It gives children a sense of achievement and helps build confidence. Look for choirs that offer regular concerts and community events. These experiences create lasting memories and deepen a child’s commitment to music. For example, Young Voices regularly sings with other local choirs in large scale productions such as Benjamin Brittain’s Noye’s Fludde, and the Fuse Festival in Beacon Park.
Also ask about progression opportunities. Does the choir offer different levels or age groups? Can children move up as they grow and improve? A clear pathway helps children stay motivated and continue developing their skills. Once members of Young Voices reach 12 years of age, they progress to the Youth Voices choir where they continue to train and perform until they turn 18. Young Voices also offers potential progression to a Choristership within the Lichfield Cathedral Choir.
5. A Sense of Community
Finally, a great children’s choir feels like a family. It’s a place where friendships are formed, teamwork is celebrated, and children learn to support one another. Choirs teach more than music—they teach empathy, discipline, and collaboration. When choosing a choir, trust your instincts. Visit a rehearsal, speak with the director, and ask your child how they feel. The right choir will not only help them sing - it will help them soar.
