Girl Choristers

The Cathedral Choir includes girl choristers, boy choristers and the Lay Vicars Choral.  All girl choristers must be enrolled at Lichfield Cathedral School.  The girls sing evensong on Wednesdays in the Cathedral and share the weekend singing duties with the boys.

Being a girl chorister involves a substantial commitment. The girls rehearse before and after school and during term sing evensong weekly in Lichfield Cathedral, as well as undertaking the main weekend services two times per term. They take part in many other rewarding concerts, activities and events, including the hugely successful outreach programme, MusicShare. Busy times of the year for choristers include Holy Week at Easter and Christmas.

Recordings, Broadcasts and Tours

As well as its Choral Foundation duties, the choir makes CD recordings and undertakes broadcasts for radio and television and tours abroad. Most recently the girls visited Rome and sang in several churches and cathedrals.

The girl choristers are all day pupils aged between 10 and 15 years and benefit from Choral Scholarships representing a 25% remission of school fees from when they join in Year 6 to the end of Year 10. On entry to Year 11, former girl choristers join Cantorum, the only scholarship-based youth choir in a school in the UK and will continue to benefit from music scholarships.

Becoming a chorister

While our main audition day usually takes place in early February, you are welcome to arrange an informal voice trial any time throughout the year. Contact the Admissions Team on 01543 306168 for further information.

Our annual Be A Chorister For A Day workshop is an excellent introduction to the world of choral music or read the document below, Life as a Chorister.
