Secondary Education for Year 7 (11+) from September 2005The Cathedral School is to build on its strong reputation in academic quality and pastoral care to provide a secondary education of real excellence; the school has the expertise, the experience, and the determination to make a strong impact from the outset. The School's ethos The School is committed to creating and maintaining throughout its age range an educational environment which nurtures, nourishes and stimulates young minds and talents; one where the children can gain not only a thorough academic foundation but also a wealth of experiences and challenges; one where good relationships and mutual respect create a learning environment in which young people can develop their individual strengths and interests with confidence. The School wants its pupils to feel proud of their School, and to enjoy a secure and ordered framework through which they can develop their self-esteem as they mature intellectually and emotionally, and discover the riches of successful participation and achievement. Furthermore, the school aims to ensure that, at whatever age they leave, the young people will take with them warm friendships and cherished memories that will last a lifetime. A learning environment Successes in examinations are one indication of the quality of academic education received. Last year, we gained record success in Key Stage 2 SATs:
At both 11+ and 13+, we gained a record number of Scholarships and Exhibitions to secondary schools, and won first-choice schools for all candidates at Common Entrance: a 100% success rate Further indications of the School's effectiveness are available in the Inspection Report of March 2004, which can be found in full on the ISI website: www.isinspect.org.uk. The report praised in particular the confident and articulate nature of our children. We have over 60 years experience teaching 11 - 13 year old children, and we intend to build on this extensive experience as we take the 11 year old children forward through their secondary years. A high quality of learning will be at the very centre of our priorities. The curriculum we presently follow prepares children for continuing secondary education at age 13+. There will be no significant changes during the next two years, though a second language will be introduced as an alternative to Latin which is presently taught from Year 5, and further opportunities will be provided for brighter children. |
